Ester is the major type of vitamin A found in foods which are of animal origin, primarily retinyl palmitate. In the small intestine, it is converted to alcohol.

The function of retinol form is to store the vitamin, which is then converted to its active visual aldehyde form, which is retinal. The retinoic acid does not work in the essential parts of reproductive system and the retina as it contains only partial A vitamin activity. Retinoic acid is a metabolite which is synthesized irreversibly from vitamin A.


Two Main Foods that Contain Vitamin A

With so many benefits for consuming vitamin A, what is the source that contains vitamin A? There are two main types of food that contain vitamin A source. One of the foods is retinol. Retinol, which comes from animal sources, is a vitamin A form and is absorbed when eaten. It is yellowish in colour, and is a fat-soluble substance. It is found in the tissues in retinyl ester form, since the pure form of alcohol is unstable.

Another main type of vitamin A source is the carotenes beta-carotene, alpha-carotene, xanthophyll beta-cryptoxanthin, and the gamma-carotene. These carotenoids function as A vitamin in omnivores and herbivores. No other carotenoids has the enzyme needed to convert these to retinal.
