Difference between vitamin d and vitamin d3
Also known as calciol or cholecalciferol, Vitamin D3 is similar to steroids
such as cholesterol, testosterone, and cortisol, although it is a secosteroid
itself. As a nutrient, it is one of the most useful supplements that
we can have. It improves
our general health and well being.
Another truth: D3 vitamin is the only nutrient which the body
can get from sunlight.
1g of D3 vitamin is 40,000,000 IU. Those who have a high risk of vitamin
D deficiency are advised to consume 5000 IU daily. Recent studies,
however, have reported that the maximum limit to consume safely is 10,000
IU. There are several forms of Vitamin D3 and they are cholecalciferol,
calcifediol, and calcitriol.
How do we get sufficient amounts of vitamin D3? Research has found out that it is necessary to take a minimum of 5,000 IU everday if adults and adolescents avoid sunlight exposure regularly. However, to achieve an intake of 5,000 IU of vitamin D, you will need to drink 50 glasses of milk, or take 10 tablets or more of multi-vitamin, which neither is advisable to do.
An interesting point to take note: With 20 to 30 minutes of exposure to the sun, the skin produces roughly around 10,000 IU of vitamin D. This amount is 50 times more than 200 IU - the daily recommended intake by the US government!
With the minimum limit of 5,000 IU daily, how do we ensure that we
receive sufficient vitamin D3 levels? Go out to receive
sun exposure regularly in summer, late spring, and early fall.
Expose your skin to sunlight as much as possible.
But be careful not to burn your skin! A sun bed should be used regularly
during cooler months, or consume 5,000 IU daily for 2 to 3 months, and
obtain a 25-hydroxy vitamin D test.
Your dosage needs to be adjusted accordingly so that the levels of blood
are between 50 to 80 ng/mL, or 125 to 200 nM/L all year round.
