Vitamin K consists of two natural forms. Phylloquinone (K1 vitamin)
is synthesized by plants. By utilizing repeating units of 5-carbon in
the molecule side chain, a range of different forms of vitamin K is
synthesized by bacteria. These vitamin K forms are menaquinone-n. "N"
is the representation of the no. of carbon units.
K vitamin is also known as clotting vitamin. In the absence of vitamin
K, blood cannot clot. Studies have indicated that vitamin K helps
the elderly maintain strong bones.
Where can we find vitamin
K source? Vitamin K is widely found in foods. It is found abundant
in foods, such as spinach, cauliflower, alfalfa, cabbage, yoghurt, and
soya beans. Oats and wheat contain lesser vitamin K.
Animal products contain very little K vitamin. A better source of vitamin
K is cow's milk rather than human milk. Bacteria produce vitamin K in
healthy intestines. Other food products which contain plenty of vitamin
K are cow liver, chicken egg yolk, cheese and butter. These are important
foods that contain vitamin K. Mayonnaise contain vitamin K as well.
On top of these, organic meats, wheat bran, kiwis, cereals, bananas,
and avocados contain plenty of Vitamin K.
Generally, most people are not concerned of deficiencies in vitamin
K. However, young children and infants are always at a higher risk of
vitamin K deficiencies. How do we prevent vitamin
K deficiencies? You can prevent it by taking green vegetables, eggs,
soy and dairy products, olive oil and canola oil. These are good sources
of vitamin K and aid in preventing deficiencies in vitamin K.
